At this meeting we have three of... the most HyperIndividuals (I think I will stop the puns now) in... the realm... With us tonight are Bill Atkinson, Dan Winkler and... Danny Goodman. Bill Atkinson is, of course, HyperCard's inventor, Dan... Winkler designed the HyperTalk programming language and Danny Goodman is the author of THE COMPLETE HYPERCARD HANDBOOK which is now available from Bantam Books! AND Following the CO or maybe toward the middle of the CO I will have a special announcement abnout yet another event that will, I think, change forever how COs such as this one might be run thanks to the magic of HyperCard and one programmer's great idea.... Also, what special cables, etc are required? Finally, color hypercard for Mac II? (Dan and Bill) Contact APDA for the Magic Hooks disk. It has video disk drivers and docs... as for cables, it's just a serial cable to the player... Re color... we're working on it, but don't hold your breath. (Phil Feldman) What is APDA? (Dan and Bill) We did not see NoteCards until long after HyprCard was frozen... We wanted the name WildCard but could not get it... (Dan and Bill) It does run on big screens now, but doesn't yet display... multiple cards at once. % Moderator recognizes queue #11 (Michael) I have heard that there is considerable unhappiness (anger?) among Mac software developers regarding Apples distribution of HyperCard. What is the problem and how serious is it? Apparently some feel that HC is pre-empting a lot of developement currently going on among third party developers? Your opinion please? (Dan and Bill) This a new medium for developers to write for... It also enables a large new class of developers... Many developers find it an excellent protoyping tool... and professional programmers can produce sophisticated XCMDS. % Moderator recognizes queue #12 (Bob LeVitus) I understand HC is constantly evolving... what might we expect (features/changes) in future revisions? (Dan and Bill) We are working hard on new things that we don't want to discuss yet... all enhancements will be upward compatible. (Bob LeVitus) Pretty please? % Moderator recognizes queue #13 (Steve Donohoe) Hello, is there any way for HC to trap & return the date & time stamps of a file? For updating purposes? (Dan and Bill) XCMDs can get that info. See the documents stack for an example. % Moderator recognizes queue #14 (KEN PLAIN) What do you feel the impact will be on small companies who have products on the market now that can easily be replaced or bettered by anyone using HyperCard? Do you plan on including more sounds in any future revisions of HyperCard (Dan and Bill) Publishing stackware is an attractive opportunity for small... companies because of the low overhead and investment... in addition, Apple is providing co-marketing for stackware... produced by small developers... We expect a lot of sounds to be available from third parties... (maybe from small companies) and you can add your own... with a sound digitizing unit (cheap)... the problem for us in providing more sounds is that they are very large and we already fill four double sided disks. (Neil/SYSOP) Do you know who small developers should contact at Apple... regarding the possibility of co-marketing? What about the the rumours of HyperCard in the system? (Dan and Bill) No, we don't think it can be done. However, we are working on... performance enhancements to the HyperTalk interpreter. % Moderator recognizes queue #18 (Mark Wheeler) Are there plans afoot to change HyperCard to allow it to work with the larger displays available for the Macintosh II? (The current version 1.0.1 does not) The intent is to resize a window on a SuperMac to full screen. (Dan and Bill) Please see previous response regarding large screens. Card size... has been deliberately standardized so that cards made on any machine... can be read on any other. % Moderator recognizes queue #19 (Jeff Greenberg) Will there be a Multiuser version of Hypercard, and if so, when? Also, will there be a way to get Hypercard to work on a 512e? (Dan and Bill) Can't make it fit on 512e (tried real hard)... A Multiuser HyperCard would sure be nice. % Moderator recognizes queue #20 (ric) I just received my answer concerning a fit to the Mac 512e re. question... number 19. So, what is the minimum configuration required for Hypercard? (Dan and Bill) Needs at least a 750K MultiFinder partition. (Neil/SYSOP) OK.. Will the next version support larger screen sizes. ie:radius or Apples? When if any Appleshare support, and/or Multifinder support? Appleshare support? Multifinder support? ETA on Color? larger Card size (greater than 512x342) XOring a copied bit image? (Dan and Bill) Please see previous response to large screen and color... and larger card size... Works now on AppleShare, but only one user can have a stack open at once. Will relax that restriction... in a future release... Please clarify question on XOR. (CARL DONE) Can you paste a cut bit image back to a card using an attribute such as XOR. (Dan and Bill) Yes, you can do that with an XCMD. % Moderator recognizes queue #22 (Jeff Summers) With the current version of Hypercard 1.0.1, the visual effects... do not work with the Mac II (at least not with the VISUAL command... will version 1.1? Being in Idaho, the book stores have not gotten... Danny Goodman's book yet. (Dan and Bill) Visual commands work on the Mac II in 1-bit ("two color") mode... only. Set this from the control panel monitors choice. Danny, what's up with your book? (Danny Goodman) If the B. Dalton stores near you... don't have the book, then try ComputerWare... in Palo Alto...they have an 800 number and... the book is discounted there...what a deal! % Moderator recognizes queue #23 (Matthew Russotto) Is the password supposed to provide much security? If so it doesn't. Also why do the phone tones only play out of one speaker? (Dan and Bill) No, the level of security we had in mind... was keeping kids from clobbering a library card catalogue... The phone tones... use the four voice engine. . % Moderator recognizes queue #24 (Kent Kingery) What will be the licensing ramifications of HyperCard for commercial developers (i.e. fees, credit, etc.)? (Dan and Bill) (regarding security... you can always encrypt the stack with a separate encryption program or lock up the disk) HyperCard will not be licensed to developers... Developers should assume that everyone already has it. % Moderator recognizes queue #25 (ROBERT GORE) Can I get a single button to toggle a data-entry field on/off? Can it make different stacks available to users... with different levels of password security? Will Hypercard also work with Macserve?.. Will new versions that allow multiple users to have stacks open.... Allow certain users with different password security to... have access to only cercertain stacks? (Dan and Bill) <inhale> please see previous response regarding AppleShare... Just one level of password security per stack, but... XCMDs can do additional checking... (Neil/SYSOP) We are 60 minutes into the CO and I want to make one brief but very interesting announcement... MAUG member Ron Risley will be holding an online course in how to program HyperCard. It will be done USING HYPERCARD itself as a sort of slide-show medium for use during an online conference! There will be a practice CO here on Oc tober 11 and watch the short bulletin of MACUS for more information as Ron gets it all together. Suffice it to say that this type of CO might begin to look a l'il primitive by the end of October if all goes well thanks to yet one more fantastic application made possible by the wonderful HyperCard program! I'll repeat this at end of CO too but wanted all to know. % Moderator recognizes queue #27 (Colin Rose) Can't get do command to work in the Message box. (Dan and Bill) Do does not work in the message box yet... We had told Danny it would. Sorry. % Moderator recognizes queue #28 (Jeff) Any problems with accessing Hypercard via modem on an appletalk server?. I'm interested in the feasibility of remote access. (Dan and Bill) (send does work in the message box by the way)... HyperCard works great over AppleTalk... but 1200 baud modem does not have sufficient bandwith. (Jeff) How about at 9600? (Dan and Bill) Still extremely painful. % Moderator recognizes queue #29 (Jensen Kvarnes) When I use Print report from most any stack, it will print in geneva regardless of what font I have the fields set for. Savidge) Is it possible for data base mang. programs to be written for/using HyperCard and its Script Language ? If so, would it have any atvantages over say... 4th Demension ? (Dan and Bill) Each system has its own strengths... I have stacks that don't NEED to run on small scfreens and DO need all the pixels they can get. Does it really make sense to have a *standard* card size, any more than a standard sheet of paper? Stokes III) Is Apple working on developing a scripting standard whereby when an application is launched, a script could be passed, that the program could then perform the desired action? This would be usefull for doing things from hypercard. (Dan and Bill) Interprocess communication is particularly important under... MultiFinder. No product announcements at this time. % Moderator recognizes queue #35 (Mike Whittingham) Is it possible to have 4th Dimension access a stack of cards as a database? (Dan and Bill) Anyone know Guy Kawasaki's Compuserve ID? We're not familiar with 4D (Mark Warrian) Dan, Might the next release of hTalk include file/folder commands as standard? And bill Bill as a programmer do you prefer bit-plane graphics to chunky pixals? What am I doing wrong? THANKS FOR HYPERCARD... (Dan and Bill) You need version 4.0 of LaserWriter, 2.6 of ImageWriter... Dealers and user groups have LaserWriter, ImageWriter is on.. Do I have to write a specific button script? We use a hashing technique to speed up searching... for best results type at least three characters... of each word and include as many words as possible. % Moderator recognizes queue #41 (Allan Hansen) 1. hypertalk is great 2. Why is the status of a background check button global to the stack while the contents of a background text field is local to the card? (I need cards with check buttons having different statuses) 1. Why is the status of a background check button 'global' to the stack, while the contents of a background text field is 'local' to the card. 2. Do you plan to add menus to the collection of objects available? 3. Do you envision a more general programming language a la Hypertext? (Dan and Bill) 1. Aw, Shucks. 2. We don't yet support shared buttons with... card specific attributes. 3. Adding menus is possible with an XCMD... see DL 8. (Allan Hansen) send 2. are you going to? (Dan and Bill) We don't know yet about shared buttons, etc... we have other things to do with higher priority... No drastic changes to HyperTalk envisioned. (Neil/SYSOP) On the menu thing check out HCMENU.PIT in DL8 of MACUS... it may do what you need. % Moderator recognizes queue #43 (bob jones) why won't this work? choose select tool doMenu copy (or copy picture) ... gives an error for unrecognized parameters sorry - drag from ... to ... was left out! should read choose,drag,copy - why the errors? trying to copy part of one card to another. (Dan and Bill) All scripts are stored as English on the disk... There are provisions for translating a script just... before display and back just before storing. (Dan and Bill) There is nothing behind the background picture -- so we always treat it as opaque... (craig danuloff) I I mean not earsing the previous card graphic, i guess. (Dan and Bill) bitmaps are big even with compression... scripts are one byter per character... buttons and fields are small, typically 20 bytes or so. % Moderator recognizes queue #60 (Michael Long) Please clarify a previous answer, does putting empty into a global free up everything? (data, name, handle, etc.) And I just have to know, did you guys like the Menus stack? (Dan and Bill) Putting empty reduces the data to one byte, name and handle unchanged. LOOOVED the menus stack. If a 3rd party soft maker want to make "HyperCard-like" product, they must 'simulate' HyperTalk and read/write Stack. Is it allowed to imitate the spec of HyperTalk ? Will be the format of Stack public ? (Dan and Bill) Don't know the details, but past experience... has shown Apple to be litigious. (joil lee) arigato. % Moderator recognizes queue #69 (Lavona Rann) Is there a simple way to copy an entire background to make an additional background for a stack? (i.e. copy background?) or do we have to write a "loop"? HC is GREAT and Danny's book was a big help. (Dan and Bill) If you copy a card, modify the orignal background... a little and then paste card, you'll end up with two... almost identical backgrounds. When you paste a card, we check to see if its background is IDENTICAL to an existing background. If not, we create a new background. % Moderator recognizes queue #71 (Walter Korman) Is there a way to get HyperCard to ignore the Command-period and... to not stop the script right in the middle? (Dan and Bill) No. Command period is intentinally ... the ultimate weapon against runaway scripts. % Moderator recognizes queue #74 (Eric Celeste) kudos to all, this is great stuff... any plans for a browse/type only smaller app or DA version? (Dan and Bill) No, you need the entire interpreter in every version... However, we'd be happy to sell you a hard drive and more memory. (Dan and Bill) English language fails. Too many to pick from. (Danny Goodman) I like the one that takes CompuServe messages... and makes them into cards for searching... browsing and so on (it's in DL 8)... and of course, Business Class and Focal Point ain't bad. % Moderator recognizes queue #83 (Michael Long) Ok, just one more question, is it possible to trap chars coming into a field in order to filter out unwanted chars (like alphas in a numeric field or return chars in a single line field) as well as to pass cursor keys to TEdit so inline editing works without going to another card?
