Transcript of the HyperCard Conference held 9/20/87 in the CompuServe
Convention Center with special guests:
Bill Atkinson Author of HyperCard
Dan Winkler Author of HyperTalk
Danny Goodman Author of The Complete HyperCard Handbook
At 9 PM EDT, Neil Shapiro, Chief Sysop of MAUG(tm) and conference
moderator kicked off the conference:
(Neil/SYSOP) Well, MAUG(tm) is very happy tonight to present a very special...
event, the first HyperConference. At this meeting we have three of...
the most HyperIndividuals (I think I will stop the puns now) in...
the realm... With us tonight are Bill Atkinson, Dan Winkler and...
Danny Goodman. Bill Atkinson is, of course, HyperCard's inventor, Dan...
Winkler designed the HyperTalk programming language and Danny Goodman
is the author of THE COMPLETE HYPERCARD HANDBOOK which is now available
from Bantam Books! AND
Following the CO or maybe toward the middle of the CO I will
have a special announcement abnout yet another event that will, I
think, change forever how COs such as this one might be run thanks
to the magic of HyperCard and one programmer's great idea....
More on THAT in a bit (allow me a 'lil mystery here)!
% Moderator recognizes queue #1
(CARL DONE) What is the current version of hypercard? and is it on compuserve?
(Dan and Bill) 1.0.1. no.
(CARL DONE) what is the next version comming, and can we put in on compuserve?
(Dan and Bill) the next version will be 1.1 and no.
(CARL DONE) Thanks for the fantastic visionary product.
(Dan and Bill) aw, shucks.
(Neil/SYSOP) let me just clarify that Apple feels that HyperCard should not...
be online due to the size of the support files and the...
manual and I sort of agree with that anyway let's move to
the next questioner...
% Moderator recognizes queue #2
(Phil Feldman) Interactive laser videodisc: I am looking for documentation. Also, what special
cables, etc are required? Finally, color hypercard for Mac II?
(Dan and Bill) Contact APDA for the Magic Hooks disk. It has video disk drivers and docs...
as for cables, it's just a serial cable to the player... Re color...
we're working on it, but don't hold your breath.
(Phil Feldman) What is APDA? AND THANKS FOR THE GREAT BREAKTHROUGH
(Dan and Bill) Apple Programmer's and Developer's Assocaition...
and the phone number is 206-251-5222 in Renton, WA.
(Neil/SYSOP) APDA also has a a section on the APPDEV Forum and can be contacted there too.
% Moderator recognizes queue #4
(Michael Long) I am doing a large project with HC and need to be...
able to delete global variables after they are...
no longer needed, can this be done? (XCMD?)
(Dan and Bill) Put empty into the variable.
% Moderator recognizes queue #5
(Andrew Solmssen) Bill, Dan, and Danny, any hope of a command to take a 32x32 piece of screen and
make it an Icon resource in HC, so we don't have to cut and paste twice to move
a non-standard button from card to card?
(Dan and Bill) There are desk accessories that do that now and in some day ...
we'll include an icon editor.
(Andrew Solmssen) I thought they made ICN#, not Icons
(Dan and Bill) No, ICON.
% Moderator recognizes queue #6
(Fred Di Marco) Is an XCMD possible that can open multible documents..such as three
linked worksheets from Excel?
(Dan and Bill) An XCMD can read and write to as many files as it wants...
% Moderator recognizes queue #7
(Tim Butler/Chicago) cAN HYPER CARD ACCESS THE CLOCK IN 1//BUFFER EDIT
CAN HYPERCARD RECOGNIZE THE CLOCK WITH TENTH OF SECOND ACCURACY AND WOULD
SPECULATE IF THE PROGRAM CAN CONTROL SONY'S MULTIPLE COMPACT DISK PLAYERS THAT
HAVE A SERIAL PORT ON THEM. THANKS.
(Dan and Bill) The ticks functions gives you 1/60th of a second accurracy...
and external commands can control cd players or anything else.
% Moderator recognizes queue #8
(Larry Lowe) Did you develop the HyperCard concepts from the XEROX PARC NoteCards
hypertext browser system, or is the name coincidence?
(Dan and Bill) We did not see NoteCards until long after HyprCard was frozen...
We wanted the name WildCard but could not get it...
HyperCard was one of several available choices and we took it.
% Moderator recognizes queue #9
(BOB JONES) HOW CAN I COPY A PICTURE FROM ONE CARD TO ANOTHER USING HYPERTALK?
(Dan and Bill)
on mouseUp
choose select tool
doMenu "Select All"
doMenu "Copy Picture"
go to next card
doMenu "Paste Picture"
end mouseUp
% Moderator recognizes queue #10
(Steve Epstein) (And try doing THAT in C...) Q: Are we going to see big screen support any-
time soon?
(Dan and Bill) It does run on big screens now, but doesn't yet display...
multiple cards at once.
% Moderator recognizes queue #11
(Michael) I have heard that there is considerable unhappiness (anger?) among Mac
software developers regarding Apples distribution of HyperCard. What is the
problem and how serious is it? Apparently some feel that HC is pre-empting a lot of developement
currently going on
among third party developers? Your opinion please?
(Dan and Bill) This a new medium for developers to write for...
It also enables a large new class of developers...
Many developers find it an excellent protoyping tool...
and professional programmers can produce sophisticated XCMDS.
% Moderator recognizes queue #12
(Bob LeVitus) I understand HC is constantly evolving...
what might we expect (features/changes) in future revisions?
(Dan and Bill) We are working hard on new things that we don't want to discuss yet...
all enhancements will be upward compatible.
(Bob LeVitus) Pretty please?
% Moderator recognizes queue #13
(Steve Donohoe) Hello, is there any way for HC to trap & return the date & time
stamps of a file? For updating purposes?
(Dan and Bill) XCMDs can get that info. See the documents stack for an example.
% Moderator recognizes queue #14
(KEN PLAIN) What do you feel the impact will be on small companies who
have products on the market now that can easily be replaced or
bettered by anyone using HyperCard?
Do you plan on including more sounds in any future revisions of
HyperCard
(Dan and Bill) Publishing stackware is an attractive opportunity for small...
companies because of the low overhead and investment...
in addition, Apple is providing co-marketing for stackware...
produced by small developers...
We expect a lot of sounds to be available from third parties...
(maybe from small companies) and you can add your own...
with a sound digitizing unit (cheap)...
the problem for us in providing more sounds is that they
are very large and we already fill four double sided disks.
(Neil/SYSOP) Do you know who small developers should contact at Apple...
regarding the possibility of co-marketing?
(Dan and Bill) Will get you that number before we log off...
don't have it handy at the moment.
% Moderator recognizes queue #15
(Jonathan) How can I export data from HC into a tab delineated file? What about the
the rumours of HyperCard in the system?
(Dan and Bill) (co-marketing questions should be directed to Lynn Knerr at Apple...
call 408-996-1010)
as for exporting data...
on mouseUp
open file "myfile"
repeat for the number of cards
repeat with i = 1 to the number of fields
write field i to file "myfile"
write tab to file "myfile"
end repeat
go to next card
end repeat
close file "myfile"
end mouseUp
% Moderator recognizes queue #17
(STEVE) BILL - WILL THERE BE A HYPERCARD COMPILER? I CAN SEE APPPLICATIONS WHERE A COMPILED
STACK WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE (CREATING AG).
WILL WE SEE AN APPLICATION THAT CREATES STANDALONE STACKS (STACK COMPILER)?
(Dan and Bill) No, we don't think it can be done. However, we are working on...
performance enhancements to the HyperTalk interpreter.
% Moderator recognizes queue #18
(Mark Wheeler) Are there plans afoot to change HyperCard to allow it to work with the larger
displays available for the Macintosh II? (The current version 1.0.1 does not)
The intent is to resize a window on a SuperMac to full screen.
(Dan and Bill) Please see previous response regarding large screens. Card size...
has been deliberately standardized so that cards made on any machine...
can be read on any other.
% Moderator recognizes queue #19
(Jeff Greenberg) Will there be a Multiuser version of Hypercard, and if so, when?
Also, will there be a way to get Hypercard to work on a 512e?
(Dan and Bill) Can't make it fit on 512e (tried real hard)...
A Multiuser HyperCard would sure be nice.
% Moderator recognizes queue #20
(ric) I just received my answer concerning a fit to the Mac 512e re. question...
number 19. So, what is the minimum configuration required for Hypercard?
(Dan and Bill) Needs at least a 750K MultiFinder partition.
(Neil/SYSOP) OK.. Gee, I remember when 16K in an Apple2 was a lot!
% Moderator recognizes queue #21
(CARL DONE) Excuse the buffered questions allready answered.
Will the next version support larger screen sizes. ie:radius or Apples?
When if any Appleshare support, and/or Multifinder support?
Appleshare support? Multifinder support? ETA on Color? larger Card size (greater than 512x342)
XOring a copied bit image?
(Dan and Bill) Please see previous response to large screen and color...
and larger card size...
Works now on AppleShare, but only one user can have a
stack open at once. Will relax that restriction...
in a future release...
Please clarify question on XOR.
(CARL DONE) Can you paste a cut bit image back to a card using an attribute such as XOR.
(Dan and Bill) Yes, you can do that with an XCMD.
% Moderator recognizes queue #22
(Jeff Summers) With the current version of Hypercard 1.0.1, the visual effects...
do not work with the Mac II (at least not with the VISUAL command...
will version 1.1? Being in Idaho, the book stores have not gotten...
Danny Goodman's book yet.
(Dan and Bill) Visual commands work on the Mac II in 1-bit ("two color") mode...
only. Set this from the control panel monitors choice.
Danny, what's up with your book?
(Danny Goodman) If the B. Dalton stores near you...
don't have the book, then try ComputerWare...
in Palo Alto...they have an 800 number and...
the book is discounted there...what a deal!
% Moderator recognizes queue #23
(Matthew Russotto) Is the password supposed to provide much security? If so it doesn't.
Also why do the phone tones only play out of one speaker?
(Dan and Bill) No, the level of security we had in mind...
was keeping kids from clobbering a library card catalogue...
The phone tones...
use the four voice engine. .
% Moderator recognizes queue #24
(Kent Kingery) What will be the licensing ramifications of HyperCard for commercial developers
(i.e. fees, credit, etc.)?
(Dan and Bill) (regarding security...
you can always encrypt the stack with a separate encryption program
or lock up the disk)
HyperCard will not be licensed to developers...
Developers should assume that everyone already has it.
% Moderator recognizes queue #25
(ROBERT GORE) Can I get a single button to toggle a data-entry field on/off?
(Dan and Bill)
on mouseUp
set lockText of field "fred" to not lockText of field "fred"
end mouseUp
% Moderator recognizes queue #26
(Jerry Levin) How will Hypercard work with networking software, e.g. Appleshare...
and Macserve? Can it make different stacks available to users...
with different levels of password security?
Will Hypercard also work with Macserve?..
Will new versions that allow multiple users to have stacks open....
Allow certain users with different password security to...
have access to only cercertain stacks?
(Dan and Bill) <inhale>
please see previous response regarding AppleShare...
Just one level of password security per stack, but...
XCMDs can do additional checking...
(Neil/SYSOP) We are 60 minutes into the CO and I want to make one brief
but very interesting announcement...
MAUG member Ron Risley will be holding an online course in
how to program HyperCard. It will be done USING HYPERCARD itself
as a sort of slide-show medium for use during an online conference!
There will be a practice CO here on Oc tober 11 and watch the
short bulletin of MACUS for more information as Ron gets it all
together. Suffice it to say that this type of CO might begin to
look a l'il primitive by the end of October if all goes well
thanks to yet one more fantastic application made possible by the
wonderful HyperCard program! I'll repeat this at end of CO too but
wanted all to know.
% Moderator recognizes queue #27
(Colin Rose) Can't get do command to work in the Message box.
(Dan and Bill) Do does not work in the message box yet...
We had told Danny it would. Sorry.
% Moderator recognizes queue #28
(Jeff) Any problems with accessing Hypercard via modem on an appletalk server?. I'm interested in the
feasibility of remote access.
(Dan and Bill) (send does work in the message box by the way)...
HyperCard works great over AppleTalk...
but 1200 baud modem does not have sufficient bandwith.
(Jeff) How about at 9600?
(Dan and Bill) Still extremely painful.
% Moderator recognizes queue #29
(Jensen Kvarnes) When I use Print report from most any stack, it will print in geneva regardless of
what font I have the fields set for. Is this a bug?
(Dan and Bill) That's what it does now. Working on enhancements.
% Moderator recognizes queue #31
(James T. Savidge) Is it possible for data base mang. programs to be written for/using HyperCard
and its Script Language ?
If so, would it have any atvantages over say... 4th Demension ?
(Dan and Bill) Each system has its own strengths...
Would need to know more about your specific application.
% Moderator recognizes queue #33
(Steve Epstein) May I wheedle you a little about card size?
I have stacks that don't NEED to run on small scfreens and
DO need all the pixels they can get. Does it really make
sense to have a *standard* card size, any more than a standard
sheet of paper?
(Dan and Bill) We'll keep your needs in mind and try to do right thing.
(Steve Epstein) Hmph.
% Moderator recognizes queue #34
(John S. Stokes III) Is Apple working on developing a scripting standard whereby when an application
is launched, a script could be passed, that the program could then perform the
desired action? This would be usefull for doing things from hypercard.
(Dan and Bill) Interprocess communication is particularly important under...
MultiFinder. No product announcements at this time.
% Moderator recognizes queue #35
(Mike Whittingham) Is it possible to have 4th Dimension access a stack of cards as a database?
(Dan and Bill) Anyone know Guy Kawasaki's Compuserve ID?
(Neil/SYSOP) Not sure what it is offhand but Guy and Scott have
an everyday presence on the MACBIZ Forum and a question posed there
might turn up an answer from them or other 4D/HyerCard user.
% Moderator recognizes queue #36
(Dan and Bill) Check with them. We're not familiar with 4D
(Mark Warrian) Dan,
Might the next release of hTalk include
file/folder commands as standard? And bill Bill
as a programmer do you prefer bit-plane graphics
to chunky pixals?
(Dan and Bill) SFGetFile and SFPutFile are now accessible as XCMDs...
see DL 8...
may later be available as built ins...
I am not religious regarding planar/chunky.
% Moderator recognizes queue #37
(PETER M. LESCHNER) I have been having trouble getting Hypercard to print. When I choose print the
system bombs. What am I doing wrong? THANKS FOR HYPERCARD...
(Dan and Bill) You need version 4.0 of LaserWriter, 2.6 of ImageWriter...
Dealers and user groups have LaserWriter, ImageWriter is on..
HyperCard distribution disk.
% Moderator recognizes queue #38
(Ron Feldman) I've consulted the manual and see no references on how to create "post-it" notes. Do I
have to write a specific button script?
(Dan and Bill) button script:
on mouseUp
set visible of card field "fred" to not visible of card field "fred"
end mouseUp
field script:
on mouseUp
hide the target
end mouseUp
(make sure field is locked)
% Moderator recognizes queue #39
(Tom N) Please indicate something about the speed of searching thru large HC stacks.
(Dan and Bill) Glad you asked...
We use a hashing technique to speed up searching...
for best results type at least three characters...
of each word and include as many words as possible.
% Moderator recognizes queue #41
(Allan Hansen) 1. hypertalk is great
2. Why is the status of a background check button global to the stack
while the contents of a background text field is local to the card?
(I need cards with check buttons having different statuses)
1. Why is the status of a background check button 'global' to the stack,
while the contents of a background text field is 'local' to the card.
2. Do you plan to add menus to the collection of objects available?
3. Do you envision a more general programming language a la Hypertext?
(Dan and Bill) 1. Aw, Shucks.
2. We don't yet support shared buttons with...
card specific attributes.
3. Adding menus is possible with an XCMD...
see DL 8.
(Allan Hansen) send 2. are you going to?
(Dan and Bill) We don't know yet about shared buttons, etc...
we have other things to do with higher priority...
No drastic changes to HyperTalk envisioned.
(Neil/SYSOP) On the menu thing check out HCMENU.PIT in DL8 of MACUS...
it may do what you need.
% Moderator recognizes queue #43
(bob jones) why won't this work?
choose select tool
doMenu copy (or copy picture)
...
gives an error for unrecognized parameters
sorry - drag from ... to ... was left out!
should read choose, drag, copy - why the errors?
trying to copy part of one card to another.
(Dan and Bill) Should work. Try quoting it (doMenu "Copy Picture")
% Moderator recognizes queue #44
(Jeff Greenberg) Why doesn't Hypercard support the R*S and the R#S digits for phone dialing (with or
without a modem)?
Outside of Digitizing the sounds myself is there a way to do this?
oops make that "#" and "*"
(Dan and Bill) Next release will support those characters as well...
as international A-D. # and * do work with modem already.
% Moderator recognizes queue #45
(Charlie) Until General Computer ships V3R2 upgrades, I'm comfortably running system 3.2. Although
HC won't print with this system,...
any other potential problems?
(Dan and Bill) We don't know. Proceed at your own risk.
(Charlie) Not what I wanted to hear.
% Moderator recognizes queue #46
(GREG HEUER) Some of us are still waiting for our HC...
What do you guys know of marketing...
BusinessLand, Rolling Meadows, IL, sold me the new SE...
Said HC was to be "bundled" but no stock yet...
Can I please have a copy??? GA
(Dan and Bill) Your dealer should have it...
we are making them as fast as we can...
they definitely owe you a copy.
(Neil/SYSOP) (Waiting For Godot... or HyperCard!) <grin>
% Moderator recognizes queue #48
(Ken Denning) Bill & Dan - Will Hyercard upgrades be handled like system software...
to User Groups?
also great book Danny!
(Dan and Bill) There are well over 50,000 copies of HyperCard in the field...
Our product manager says, upgrade policy is not determined yet...
expect an answer in about a week.
(Danny Goodman) And thanks, Ken
% Moderator recognizes queue #50
(Roger-Tucson HyperC) Thanks, Great article in new MacWorld, nice "executive summary" now
A couple of short questions
What type of User Group support is planned
Is there a PhoneLink type interface available to connect to telephone
(Dan and Bill) Regarding user groups, contact Ellen Leanse in Cupertino...
Borland makes a phone connector.
% Moderator recognizes queue #51
(Colin Rose) CCan you get a picture to scroll ina a scrolling field?
(Dan and Bill) No.
% Moderator recognizes queue #52
(Jeff/MacMania) Do you collect stacks which are available, or have you...
any idea of what is out there at any time?
Thanks again for another "Insanely Great" product!
(Dan and Bill) We got everything from DL 8...
Our testing group logs in here regularly.
% Moderator recognizes queue #53
(Samuel Lester) HyperCard is great. Will hypercard be upgraded to use styled text, or can an
XCMD be created to use it?
(Dan and Bill) Working on style changes within fields and...
text-sticky buttons while we're at it.
% Moderator recognizes queue #54
(Peter Olson/ICONtac) I have an XCMD which works with scripts ...
How do I make it language insensitive?
Can I use the WTLK resource in some way to know what the English 'put' ...
command is called in the currently selected langauge?
(Dan and Bill) All scripts are stored as English on the disk...
There are provisions for translating a script just...
before display and back just before storing. Your XCMD
will only need to handle English commands.
% Moderator recognizes queue #56
(steve macmanus) How can a laser disk and tv be used with Hypercard?
How to export data from stacks to other applications
(Dan and Bill) Please see previous responses for driving video disk...
and exporting text from cards.
% Moderator recognizes queue #58
(ROBERT GORE) Do you suppose we'll see a HC look-alike in OS/2? How protectable IS HyperCard?
(Dan and Bill) Would not be surprised by a work-alike, but it won't be the real thing.
% Moderator recognizes queue #59
(craig danuloff) Please Comment on: transparent backgrounds (to allow overlays) and
relation of elements (grahpics, scripts,# buttons, # fields) to size.
(Dan and Bill) There is nothing behind the background picture --
so we always treat it as opaque...
(craig danuloff) I I mean not earsing the previous card graphic, i guess.
(Dan and Bill) bitmaps are big even with compression...
scripts are one byter per character...
buttons and fields are small, typically 20 bytes or so.
% Moderator recognizes queue #60
(Michael Long) Please clarify a previous answer, does putting empty into a
global free up everything? (data, name, handle, etc.) And
I just have to know, did you guys like the Menus stack?
(Dan and Bill) Putting empty reduces the data to one byte, name and handle
unchanged. LOOOVED the menus stack. Thanks!
(Michael Long) shucks
% Moderator recognizes queue #62
(Charlie) When is the Lisa/XL version of HyperCard due to be shipped?
(Dan and Bill) Right after the HP41C version.
(Charlie) 0 for 2 tonight
% Moderator recognizes queue #63
(Kevin Harris) I was just wondering, I use MacInUse. Can that macinuse dialog box be
completed even though it's outside of Hypercard? (Thanks for your time)
(Dan and Bill) We don't know -- never seen MacInUse.
% Moderator recognizes queue #64
(Scott Blanchette) Is the timing used in Visual Effects Transitions ...
(ie Fast, Slow, etc..) dependant upon the Machine being
used, or is it independant of CPU speed ? & Thanks.
(Dan and Bill) We sense CPU speed and slow down effects on Mac II...
in order to make them visible at all.
% Moderator recognizes queue #66
(Steve Donohoe) When MultiFinder comes out, can you (with HC) go out to a program,
start a transfer and then return to HC and its active stack?
(Dan and Bill) With a little hacking...
you could stuff the type ahead buffer, etc.
% Moderator recognizes queue #67
(Brian K Roemmele) Any comments on the Hyper-like product..
from Owl.
(Dan and Bill) Nope.
% Moderator recognizes queue #68
(joil lee) Konnichiwa, Dan, Bill and Danny.
If a 3rd party soft maker want to make "HyperCard-like" product,
they must 'simulate' HyperTalk and read/write Stack.
Is it allowed to imitate the spec of HyperTalk ?
Will be the format of Stack public ?
(Dan and Bill) Don't know the details, but past experience...
has shown Apple to be litigious.
(joil lee) arigato.
% Moderator recognizes queue #69
(Lavona Rann) Is there a simple way to copy an entire background to make an
additional background for a stack? (i.e. copy background?) or
do we have to write a "loop"?
HC is GREAT and Danny's book was a big help.
(Dan and Bill) If you copy a card, modify the orignal background...
a little and then paste card, you'll end up with two...
almost identical backgrounds. When you paste a card,
we check to see if its background is IDENTICAL to an
existing background. If not, we create a new background.
% Moderator recognizes queue #71
(Walter Korman) Is there a way to get HyperCard to ignore the Command-period and...
to not stop the script right in the middle?
(Dan and Bill) No. Command period is intentinally ...
the ultimate weapon against runaway scripts.
% Moderator recognizes queue #74
(Eric Celeste) kudos to all, this is great stuff...
any plans for a browse/type only smaller app or DA version?
(Dan and Bill) No, you need the entire interpreter in every version...
However, we'd be happy to sell you a hard drive and more memory.
(Neil/SYSOP) HyperMerchants!
% Moderator recognizes queue #75
(Kevin Harris) I recently converted some Sidekick phonebooks to Address stacks. Is there
any way to print labels using hypercard? (thanks)
(Dan and Bill) Yes, read the manual or Danny's tome.
% Moderator recognizes queue #76
(Dan and Bill) (print report has a labels option^
(Dick Gillett) I know I should read a book first, but...
How can I move from the current card to
any card of any stack, get a field's info
there, then go back and put it into a field
in the card I started from? Thanks...
(Dan and Bill) on mouseUp
go to card "fred" of stack "jimbo"
get field 1
go back
put it into field 2
end mouseUp
(Dick Gillett) anyone want to buy mpw pascal and macapp?
(Dan and Bill) also..
if you don't want the user
to see you moving
between cards,
set lockSreen to true
....
set lockScreen to false
% Moderator recognizes queue #77
(RALPH OWEN) WHY IS THE CD ROM SO HARD TO HOOK UP TO THE MAC
HFS ON THE MAC?
HYPER CARD & CD ROM
(Dan and Bill) Because HyperCard does not yet work with read only media.
% Moderator recognizes queue #81
(Jeff/MacMania) Recognizing that you have been working on HyperCard for over a year now...
And seeing the concept go from idea to product, Did it turn out...
the way you had envisioned it when you began? Thanks.
<shake shake> wake up Danny!
(Danny Goodman) Bill describes his journey through HyperCard...
at great length in the interview I did with him...
in the beginning of the HyperCard book.
(Jeff/MacMania) ARG, the book again!!!
(Dan and Bill) The Book.
(Neil/SYSOP) But it IS a great interview! <grin>
% Moderator recognizes queue #82
(Tom Mackie/PMUG) What's the most interesting Stacks you've seen to date?
(Dan and Bill) English language fails. Too many to pick from.
(Danny Goodman) I like the one that takes CompuServe messages...
and makes them into cards for searching...
browsing and so on (it's in DL 8)...
and of course, Business Class and Focal Point ain't bad.
% Moderator recognizes queue #83
(Michael Long) Ok, just one more question, is it possible to trap chars
coming into a field in order to filter out unwanted
chars (like alphas in a numeric field or return chars in
a single line field) as well as to pass cursor keys to TEdit
so inline editing works without going to another card?
(Dan and Bill) Cannot filter char by char -- have to do your checking
on closeField, text cursor keys will be supported
in the next version.
% Moderator recognizes queue #84
(Jay Weiss) OK Thanks for the wonderful program Y'All. However, I have a Mac II ...
question. I can blank the background, but is there any way to change the
HyperCard window so the title is not seen. For Corporate presentaitons.
(Dan and Bill) use set loc of card window to position window with title
under menu bar or off top of screen. or using XCMD
you can change name in window list.
(Neil/SYSOP) Can also use KOLOR CDEV to set title bar and title text to same color...
Kludgier though!
% Moderator recognizes queue #85
(Dana D. Hoch) I have a stack that has an on idle field that continously updates
the time on the card. Is there a way to keep the cursor from
dropping out into the msg box while editing another field. Thanks
for a great product and a great book. .
(Dan and Bill) No way to do that -- when you put something into one field,
you lose the insertion point from another.
(sorry!)
% Moderator recognizes queue #86
(Peter Olson/ICONtac) What is the recommended way for an XCMD to retain some state varaibles ...
from one invocation to another ... I was hoping there would be a handle ...
private to teh XCMD passed back and forth in the param block, since using ...
a resource or a global variable means some loos of time
(Dan and Bill) No better way to do that yet. Working on it.
% Moderator recognizes queue #87
(Craig) I heard there was a set of ten disks of your own personal cards
made available for ideasto get others going...
Any way for me to get my hands on a set?
I heard your personal stack of ten disks was made available...
to get rookies started...
if not, oh well, if so, how can I get?...
(Dan and Bill) There is one disk, HyperCard Goodies 1. Two thousand
copies were given out at MacWorld Expo and you can
download it and many other stacks from CompuServe.

(Steve Smoot) Thanks to Bill, Dan, Danny and all those who made such a
terriffic product possible. Bill, when user or commercial
stackware (especially high end stackware) start getting really
big, you'll have to have armies of people building stacks. Any
plans for batch (uh oh! nasty word!) stack/card building tools?
(Dan and Bill) Scripts can already do batch processing...
They can import text from any Mac text file, etc...
We'll be responsive to future needs of stack devleopers as they arise.
Danny, did you do any batch processing in Business Class?
(Danny Goodman) Yep...
I'd say script batch processing is responsible for...
about 10 percent of the code and object names in
my stackWare.

(Mike Harrell) 1. Love HyperCard! Have been hung up on 3 times tonight, hope 3 questions ae OK.
2. HC beeps like crazy when remote stack is accessed by Tops. Why?
3. I have problems opening stack when locked by Finder.
4. Is printing cards done with Bmaps or Qdraws?
5. Thanks, and ignore any redundant questions.
(Dan and Bill) We can only open stacks that have read/write permission...
Card graphics are entirely bitmaps but text is structured...
and printed with Laser fonts where possible.
(Mike Harrell) Earlier you mentioned locking aDisk? read/Write permission?????
(Dan and Bill) We meant locking a disk in a safe for security.

(Eric Celeste) I would like only cards with "fred" on them in stack "rolo"
to be printed (or thumbed through, or whatever). Is there
any way to hide the rest of the cards?
(Dan and Bill) on mouseUp
open printing
repeat for the number of cards
if the name of this card is "fred"
(sorry -- meant: if field 1 contains "fred" )
then print this card
go to next card
end repeat
close printing
end mouseUp
(Eric Celeste) and i guess selecting
so that
cards can be hidden is not
needed because the idea
is that searching ("Find")
is fast enough for that???
(Dan and Bill) Find is extremely fast --
you can say: find "fred" in field 1

(Raines/BMUG) I just wanted to mention that the "HyperCard Goodies 1" disk mentioned
earlier is available as disk #1 of BMUG's 10 HyperCard disks, which we
make available to anyone for $3/disk to cover the disk, duplication,
and postage. You can EasyPlex us at 70007,2271 for more information.

(Peter Olson/ICONtac) Is there a particularly nifty way to detect a mouse click in an irregularly ...
shaped region (specifically the example of selecting a state from a map ...
of the USA?
(Dan and Bill) (Thanks, Raines)
Buttons are cheap. Use several overlapping buttons.

Dick Gillett <1048577>
(Dick Gillett) ok, in reference to the script you gave...
i need to pick a line from a field in the current card
and find a card in another stack with either
that name or number
then come back and display info from that card...
(Dan and Bill) on mouseUp
get line 3 of field 1
go to stack "jojo"
find it
get field "data"
go back
put it into field 2
end mouseUp

(Eric Celeste) just have to say
the simplicity of that last one is a bit stunning!
Is there a good address for each of you where we can reach you
when the questions come to us??
(Dan and Bill) For a small fee...
(Eric Celeste) who then
should we write to/talk with
when questions arise... apda?
(Danny Goodman) There are plenty of gurus on CompuServe.
(Dan and Bill) Apple is not offering direct support
(Neil/SYSOP) Section 8 on MACUS is a good place to find./..
other Hyperheadds.
(Dan and Bill) Have to rely on user groups, etc.
% Moderator recognizes queue #96
(Dan and Bill) Oh no, a bug report...
(Robin Shank) hi guys! just wanted to prove the "presence" of Testing here,
send us a post card! we miss you
(Dan and Bill) Weather is here. Wish you were beautiful.

(Ted Ledbetter) Is it a coincidence that hypercard was released
during the Harmonic Convergence transition period?
(Dan and Bill) We planned it that way 7 years ago.
(Ted Ledbetter) Much thanks from all of us here in Texas for a great hack
(Dan and Bill) Hack??!!
(Ted Ledbetter) (smile)

(Mark Warrian) Bill--
so I gather hcard has kept
you busy, but what's the last movie
you got out to see and what did
you think of it>?
(Dan and Bill) He's thinking...
It's been a while...
We'll have to get back you on that one...
wait!
It was at DisneyLand -- I took Laura and she
liked Captain EO

(Michael Stoodt) Danny, I saw a bit of BusinessClass (is that the right name?
sorry if not) at MacWorld Expo/Boston; but not Focal Point;
What is the topic of that stack?
(Danny Goodman) Focal Point is an information manager for...
things like time, dates, projects, proposals, deadlines,...
expenses--in short, all the things I hate to
worry about. Everything is interlinked so you...
don't have to retype or remember anything. I kinda like it.

(Michael Long) Three questions:
1. Danny stated (in his book?) that the file formats for HC would
made available. How soon can we expect this?
2. Are you going to make any internals (current TEH, global
table location/format, etc.) available?
3. How can you get the number of cards for bkgnd id 34?
(Dan and Bill) 1. Apple is not publishing file format right now.
2. Probably not.
3. You can count them, but no easy way to do it right now....
go to card i of bkgnd id 34 works...
(Michael Long) ouch, three for three!

(Kevin Harris) when the screen is blacked (for screen burnout prevent), is there a way to
either blank the cursor or move it around randomly (as in Oasis)?
(thanks)
(Dan and Bill) use an all transparent cursor.
(Neil/SYSOP) Dan/Bill and Danny.... We have this area for another...
45 minutes or so but if you're exhausted yet lemme know...
Can you stick for that much longer if we get questions?
(Dan and Bill) This ain't nothing compared to writing the code...
(Danny Goodman) I'm still OK.
(Dan and Bill) keep going!

(Al Webster) Bill, I'd heard (somewhere) of your work with HC and OCR equipment helping out a library.
I would like to do the same thing for my university library. What OCR setup are you using?
(Dan and Bill) High school students typing for $6/hour.

(ed mullin) How can you get the MAC to return to the HOME CARD after
quitting an Application?
(Dan and Bill) in the stack script of home:
on resume
go home
end resume

(Raines/BMUG) A more Mac-ish way to do the first part
of what Eric Gillett asked
would be to:
on mouseUp (on a locked text field):
drag from (item 1 of the target)+3,(item 2 of the clickLoc)
to (item 3 of the target)-15 -- or whatever the width of the scroll bar, if applicable
, (item 2 of the clickLoc)
oh yeah, unlock the field first.
This will highlight the line, so then:
get the selection
will refer to the contents of the line the user clicked on.
does this make any sense?
(Dan and Bill) Whatever works for you.

(B.L.) (Sorry if this has been covered; I wasn't able to be
here earlier.) Any _rough_ estimate of how soon we
can expect multiuser capability in HyperCard?

(Steve Smoot) Bill, I'm working in a new venture within GTE Corporation having
to do with the publishing industry. We are interested in getting
an endorsement from Apple in one of our market sectors i.e.
Macintosh publications. We have considered using Hypercard for
the front end because so many users will eventually have it. Our
contacts at Apple (what little contact we have) have told us to
think about MacWorkstation. We just established contact with
Apple (Jim Floyd) about a month ago. How should we proceed with
getting to the right people.
(Dan and Bill) Continue working with Jim Floyd and also perhaps
Ken Rosen if it's specific to HyperCard.

(Dennis) This may be inappropriate (my first formal conference). Is HC support
available only thru dealers? And how does one resize a button?
(Dan and Bill) Drag from the corner with button tool to resize, from middle to move..
or set rect of button "fred" to 10,10,20,20 from script
support is available through dealers (if they feel like it)
and through users groups...
Apple does not have a formal support program.

(Mark Warrian) The Hypercard help stack is great.
Is Apple considering an Inside Mac on Stack?
(Dan and Bill) That would be nice. No comments on unannounced products.

(Al Webster) 1. HC and MIDI? Any stuff out there yet?
2. HC in Apple Roms in near future?
3. my system crashed after OCR and hight school student. (could you repeat)
Merci and gracias.
(Dan and Bill) 1. If it's not there yet, it will be soon --
easy to do from XCMD.
2. Not in near future -- some portions may
end up in ROM some day.
3. See transcript -- tired fingers.

(Dan and Bill) find "fred new york"

(David Kalwitz) Is it just me or is there a typo in the toDetail section of "A Visual Outliner" in Danny's
book?
(Danny Goodman) where?
(David Kalwitz) An ampersand that should have been a doubel ampersand?
(Danny Goodman) It IS a typo...there should be an extra space...
before the right quote (or a double ampersand)...
You need the space, you're right. Thanks.

(Danny Goodman) Activision says early November. Same for Focal Point.
% Moderator recognizes queue #118
(Mark Warrian) Sorry if this was asked earlier, but I went running...
How much text can be put in a scrollable
field? And Danny, what stores will be carrying
Focal Point & Business class?

(Danny Goodman) Most Apple dealers will be carrying it...
also check with Activision (415)960-0410

(Jeff/MacMania) Is there a way to change the color bit on the Macintosh II...
through HyperCard directly or need it be done externally?
The Above is to Bill.
Also, to Danny, can I get an autographed version of your book if I find one?
(Dan and Bill) Could be done with XCMD.
(Danny Goodman) Where are you, Jeff?
(Jeff/MacMania) I amI am in Idaho Falls Idaho and am dying for a copy...
(Danny Goodman) Jeff, if you ever see me at a computer show, I'd
be happy to sign my life away....
I'll be at Mac Hack West in Corvalis
OR later this week.
(Neil/SYSOP) Well, I guess we should wrap things up now...
We have this here host for another half hour and then they
pull the plug anyway...
I will "open" the channel so that we can all talk at once and
applaud and all that good stuff...
but first...
I just want to than Bill Atkinson and Dan Winkler for one of the
most wonderful, perhaps the most wonderful program ever to come
along. And to thank Danny for the book that makde that program
available to so many people! And, of course, to thank them all for
having been here this evening!! Thanks guys!!
